Dog Treats Taste Better With Hemp

Dog Treats Taste Better With Hemp

Rover won’t get high eating these new-age dog treats, but he will reap the medicinal, therapeutic and nutritional benefits of hemp.

“While marijuana and hemp come from the same plant, hemp is perfectly safe for pets as a nutritional supplement,” said Darcy Bomford of Vernon-based True Leaf Medicine International.

“True Leaf Pet natural soft moist chews for dogs made with hemp are free of any of the side effects associated with recreational marijuana. In other words, your pet won’t get stoned.” Bomford is in both the dog treat and medical marijuana businesses.

After 25 years of owning and operating dog food and baked treats business Darford, he was bought out by investors in 2012. Looking for another innovative business to start up, he founded True Leaf Medicine International. It has passed through Health Canada’s preliminary and enhanced screening process and is awaiting final approval to open a medical marijuana production and distribution business in Lumby.

Meanwhile, Bomford decided to use the hemp connection to get back into the pet food business with True Leaf Pet treats. Ground seeds from hemp grown in Manitoba have been used to create True Leaf's hemp chews, which come in a five-gram treat size.

The greenish little treat is predominantly chicken, but adds the active ingredient of hemp which has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and is high in Omega 3's and essential fatty acids. While True Spirit is great for dogs of all ages, it’s especially aimed at older dogs who are seeking relief from stiffness in the joints and looking for a general health boost. (Other chews include True Calm for calming support and True  Love for antioxidant support.)

Bomford’s two dogs, Sophie, a golden retriever, and Molly, a black Labrador retriever, both aged nine, have been gobbling True Leaf Pet treats.

“They love them,” said Bomford. “They are getting up there at nine-years-old, but both of them act young.”
